Thanksgiving Crafts
Thanksgiving is a great holiday to do crafts around simply because it’s so celebratory and it inspires lots of kindness to others as well as a movement away from spending a lot of money and being more concerned with family and home life. Because of all this it’s a great time to get together with family and friends and have some fun making thanksgiving crafts. Thanksgiving also inspires lots of beautiful displays not just with a big feast but also with lovely table settings and fun decorations children like to make as well.
When it comes to setting the table for thanksgiving crafts are by far the best way to go. Children can have fun making place mats in the shape of turkeys that can be laminated and used year after year. It’s also fun for children to be able to create a little thanksgiving “scene” to decorate the center of the table with. A great way to do this is to set up a little village to show the pilgrims and the indians along with some decorative pumpkins, squash, and dried corn, often in a cornucopia basket. Children wanting to make their own thanksgiving scene can get very creative which can be a lot of fun for everyone involved. Children can use little milk cartons that have been washed out and paint them to make them resemble little houses for their village. They can use popsicle sticks and construction paper to make teepees for the indian homes along with fences for any pretend animals (or sheep made from cotton balls) they may want to have out. This can be a very cute way to set up a display on a table for thanksgiving dinner. You can also have fun making name tags for people who are coming to eat with you. If you want you can use small rocks that have been painted with each persons name, a dried corn husk with their name stenciled on it, a colorful “turkey” feather with a name tag attached to it, turkey hands made from tracing on construction paper and many more. Place settings like this are fun crafts to have everyone do and they make great gifts for people to take home with them after the meal is over.
Young children may also find it fun to dress up around thanksgiving time and this can easily be accomplished by wearing pilgrim style clothing with a vest and a hat or having some indian clothes made for them with fabric and feathers. They can also make fun indian jewelry with brightly colored beads and feathers and “trade” them for extra desserts or goodies at the end of the meal.
It can also be a lot of fun to get crafty with your thanksgiving meal and try new things. We all know about the traditional turkey and stuffing but why not try some native american dishes for your thanksgiving this year? Maybe try a recipe for apple cider or a new squash or potato dish. Just don’t skip out on the pumpkin pie or your guests may not be too happy with you.
Thanksgiving is a great time to have fun with crafts so get creative, look around for new ideas, and see if you can find something that might become a family tradition.
